Teach Me The Value Of My Thorn!

"My God, I have never thanked Thee for my thorn, I have thanked Thee a thousand times for my roses, but not once for my thorn. I have been looking forward to a world, where I shall get compensation for my cross, but I have never thought of my cross as itself a present glory...teach me the value of my thorn"⠀ - George Matheson⠀

When I first read this, I was a little puzzled by the idea of thanking God for my thorn. There are commands to rejoice in many books of the Bible. Rejoicing in the midst of trials is possible because we have hope in a Father that will be with us in the trials. We also know that trials are temporary to this earthly life, and there will be no place for suffering in Heaven. Still, to thank God for troubles seem like a hard task. And...it is without the help of the Holy Spirit. However, with Him, we can find reasons to be thankful for our thorn.⠀ As humans, we naturally gravitate towards pride. It is common for us to think more of ourselves than we should. Though our eyes should remain on Christ, they tend to wander away from Him to other things- like material possessions, talents, or other people. But, what happens when we are in trouble? We become aware of the need of our Savior again. Suffering and thorns humble us. They show us how we desperately need God. Our thorns remind us to cling to Jesus.⠀

It is easier to thank God for our roses. They bring happiness, and are gifts from God. Rejoicing in seasons of what seems like ease and security feel light. Thanksgiving isn't as much of a sacrifice as it is when we are suffering. But in suffering, there is a type of communion with God that wouldn't happen without it. We share in Christ's suffering, just as He promised. And, Christ-likeness is developed during difficult times. ⠀ Your thorn is making you more like Jesus. You may not want your thorn, neither did Paul, but it kept even him humbled. You may not be able to clearly see the value of the thorn, but you can ask that God would teach you. Oh Lord, teach us the glory of our cross!⠀
